Digital Content Infrastructure for the Human & Social Sciences (DCI) Project May 2006 • 67 universities • Application to CFI for $19.4 M • Universities to bring matching funds of $29.2 M Nov 2006 • CFI Board approves award of $19.1 M • Universities to bring matching funds of $28.7 M: • $11.9 M from institutional sources • $16.8 M from 9 provincial funders • Total project value of $47.8 M over three years Feb 2007 • CFI public announcement

  4. DCI Project Goal • To enable interdisciplinary and innovative research in Canada, through systematic, coordinated and national access to the best of global knowledge in the human and social sciences (HSS).

  5. DCI Project Objectives • to secure durable rights and equitable access to a cohesive portfolio of digital content • to implement access to a broad and high-impact suite of digital resources • to acquire a critical mass of digital text, data, images, visual, and sound content

  6. Inter-Institutional Agreement • Required by CFI • 63 institutions have signed • Funds to flow with all 67 signatures • CRKN to invoice 1st instalment ~Nov 07

  7. Content IS Infrastructure • Public good, public value • Equitable access; addresses disparities • Primary goal is capacity building; enabler • Requires multi year commitments and ongoing investments • Return on investment is in the community served

Expanded Digital Content Infrastructure • provide pan-Canadian and equitable access to a critical mass of digital content • reduce research barriers caused by existing economic, regional and disciplinary disparities • stimulate development of new: • methods of inquiry • networked approaches • interactive structures for conducting research and creating knowledge • collaborative research communities

  10. Consultation Process • Focus groups • Wish lists (296 titles) • Prioritization ranking survey (260 titles) • Institution top 10 priorities • 140 titles with at least one vote • 49 titles retained after review by NRT

Guiding Principles • Member demand & interest • Flexibility of content (interoperability of content) • Multiple languages including French content • Diversity of disciplines (including interdisciplinary) • Diversity of formats (e.g. e-journals, e-books, multimedia, news sources) • 40% minimum investment in non-recurring cost
