About Miss Missak • Background *Graduated from Western Michigan University *Bachelors degree in Elementary Education K-9 *Working toward an LBS 1 endorsement (one more class!) Experience *3 years teaching at a private school in Addison, Illinois * 2nd year in the district- 1 at Crystal Lawns and 1st year at Lakewood Falls
ReadingGood Habits Great Readers/Super Sleuth Shared Reading (25 min/day) • The teacher models (think-alouds) • Students learn to: • See themselves as readers • Make sense of text • Use what they know • Understand how stories work • Read to learn • Monitor & organize ideas and info. • Think critically about books!
ReadingGood Habits Great Readers and Super Sleuth Guided Reading (15-20 minutes per group per day) • Small group instruction • Based on learning and instructional needs • Direct instruction in reading skills and strategies • Informal assessment done through students reading and discussing text
WritingGood Habits Great Readers 45 minutes daily • Supports and extends strategies taught in Shared Reading • Uses literature to model writing and techniques used by published authors • Writing Lesson Structure: • Teacher models • Students work independently or in small groups • Students share writing

Differentiated Math Instruction (Intervention Time) • 30 minutes a day • Based on individual student needs • Facilitated by another teacher or trained staff member at Lakewood Falls • Enrich third grade Math Curriculum through small group instruction
Homework • Spelling Menu will be sent home on Day 1 of spelling instruction each week for your child • Math supplemental practice pages • Sent home nightly and due the next day • Math Facts • Practice math facts 10 minutes or more a night using websites, flashcards, pencil/paper, etc. • Reading • 20 minutes of more of reading a night – may include supplemental pages as well
Student Planner • Nightly Homework Assignments • Important Projects/Tests • Date Reminders • Student Behavior • Returned to school daily after parents check off on seeing assignments
Friday Folder • Each Friday a folder will be sent home with important quizzes/tests or papers. • There is a place for you to sign your name that you saw the folder- please return ASAP or by the next Thursday. • Weekly reflection filled out by your child

Assessment • Daily work, participation, reviews, projects, self-assessments, checklists, informal teacher observation, portfolios • District-normed assessments – Language Arts, Math, Science, & Social Studies • i-Ready Testing • PARCC Testing (spring) • Report Cards • Standards-based for Language Arts and Math • Letter grade for Science
Midquarter Reports and Conferences • Reports will be sent home mid-quarter to note student progress: • Academically • Behaviorally • Will only be sent home with students where there are academic or behavioral concerns • Conferences – Mandatory at the end of 1st Quarter. Can be requested in the Spring by either the teacher or parents.

General Information • Snack – between 1:30-2:00 • Dairy & Peanut Free Please! • Nutritious Snack • Suggestions: fresh fruit & vegetables, applesauce, fruit cups, plain rice cakes, wheat and saltine crackers • Only non-food birthday treats please (pencils, stickers, notepads) • PTA provides snacks for Holiday parties – please do not send candy or treats- info to come! • PTA Fundraisers—Money goes towards buying items for the students to use in the school/classroom!
General Info. cont… • Medication – nurse • No trading cards or toys • Bus Riders – Parent note if student is not riding bus • Student Absences – contact the main office • Field Trips – Signed Permission Form
Class Dojo • Students earn points for good behavior, bringing planner signed and turning homework in on time • Parents can stay connected by downloading the app and signing up • There will also be quarterly parties for students who earn a high percentage for good points vs. negative points • Students can lose points for unwanted behavior (talking, not being respectful, etc.)
Coin Rewards • Students are given coins for showing positive behavior (ALL teachers, lunchroom/recess, hallway, etc.) • Coins are never taken away. • Students can use their coins to “purchase” items though our classroom or the school, on Friday.

What is Bullying? Bullying is the deliberate, hurtful treatment that is repeated over time. It is important that every person realize he/she has the right to feel safe.
