Who is WebMD? • WebMD is a leading provider of health information services to consumers, physicians, healthcare professionals, employers and health plans through public and private online portals by providing objective healthcare and lifestyle information. • They provide credible information, supportive communities and in-depth reference material about health subjects.
The Internet as a Primary Source of Health Information • February 10, 2003, WebMD released research findings that demonstrate the Internet has become the primary source of health information for consumers. • More consumers spend more time looking for health information online than with any other media source and report higher satisfaction with online health information particularly with WebMD. • (2002)Research commissioned by WebMD and conducted by marketing research firms Market Facts (now Synovate) and Manhattan Research, indicates that 52% of health-involved consumers use the Internet to seek health information compared to TV news programs at 44%, health magazines at 37%, magazine ads at 19%, TV ads at 18%. • Approximately 87% of physicians use the Internet in their practice.
WebMD Health Corp. • WebMD Health Corp. is a subsidiary of Emdeon Corporation. • Emdeon Corporation changed its name to HLTH Corporation in connection with the sale of 52% of its Emdeon Business Services segment. • The new name took effect on May 21, 2007.
WebMD and AOL • April 25, 2002, AOL and WebMD Corporation announced the launch of the new AOL Health Channel with WebMD. • Under the agreement WebMD became the primary provider of healthcare content, tools and services across all America Online brands. • This new alliance will allow AOL members a comprehensive one-stop destination for health information, including: • Convenient access to WebMD content through AOL keyword • More Condition Centers with information on diseases and conditions. • Numerous health assessment tools and tests.
