Water Birth- Social Aspects • Lack of formal research on benefits and risks • Experiences vary per mother • Debates of potential choke/drown occurrence in newborns
Water Births-Social Aspects Potential Benefits Potential Risks Water entering the mother’s bloodstream Infant Inhaling water Umbilical cord is severed Infection transfer (ex. Herpes) • Relaxing • Ease of positioning • Reduce tearing risk • Similar environment to amniotic sac
Home Births • What is it? • Most popular birthing method years ago • Midwife’s supplies • medication, sterile equipment, suturing equipment
Home Births CONT. • When to consider home birth: • Low-risk pregnancy • Do not want medication • Comforts of home • When NOT to consider home birth: • Diabetic mother • Past preterm labor • Not supported by partner
Home Births CONT. • Sometimes a hospital transfer may be in order, why? • Premature rupturing • Fetal distress • Hemorrhage
Home Births CONT. • Doctors’ opinions: • High-risk pregnancies • Safest birthing place at a hospital or birthing center
Home Births CONT. • Home birth supporters’ opinions: • Not a disorder • Want personalized care • Less chaotic • Want control
Hypnobirthing- General Information • Also known as the Mongan Method • Type of natural childbirth • Emphasis: pregnancy and birth • Technique taught through class
Hypnobirthing- General Information • Discourages intervention • Self-hypnosis • Relaxed, but in control • Not in a trance or sleeping • Seeks to eliminate mother’s fear and anxiety
Hypnobirthing-Social Aspects • National Health Service (NHS) is studying the effectiveness Hypnobirthing • ~60% of women use some sort of pain relief while giving birth • Thus far proven to be effective with ¼ of all births • Critics: should not be used in place of pain relief
