  1. WAWC´2005 • Conceptualization of User-Centric Personalization Management Kari Heikkinen and Riku Suomela • Kari Heikkinen

  2. to identify both user demand and user requirements for personalization management to apply personal information is both user centric personalization management and personalized service provisioning to build a conceptualization for personalization management to be implemented so that it supports user centricness Objectives

  3. What is User Centricity? • Trying to Understand the users ! • Beginning from finding out the real user demand and user requirements • Ending to developing technology in a manner it would serve the individual user in a best manner

  4. Basic UCD Research process Information Gathering Design / Implementation Focus Groups Other Information Gathering Conceptualization Prototypes (high + low fidelity) Simulation Evaluation Iterative Prototype Development Subjective Evaluation

  5. Attribute (Personal Information) Classification User Attribute Networking Attribute Contact Information Network Performance Calendar Information Service Execution List of Point of Interests Device Capabilities Personal Service Information Classification based on FG1 Emergency Data History / Log file Miscellanous Community Attribute General Attribute Single Community Privacy Grouped Community Trust Buddylist Personalization Customization Servicelist History / Log file Security Miscellanous

  6. Human Experience People do not want to personalize ? TRUE ! Majority of users use the default choices or change only little i.e. the layout of the web-page Personalization may restrict the extent and the variety of information we receive TRUE ! Indeed only getting certain kind of information could limit i.e. the decision-making and biased behaviour People do not have well-defined preferences TRUE ! In reality the choice of the user might be highly context or situation dependent and thus against any profile

  7. Human Experience People might be reluctant to give information about them TRUE ! Privacy concerns are very high. On the other hand in some cases personal information is easily handed over. Personalization is a black box solution to the users and the users do not usually know all details of the personalization and this could lead to the distrust of technology TRUE ! The users wants to control own information and by doing so can trust the system more

  8. Personalization can be seen as a toolbox (or capability) that contains a set of technologies that enable the meeting of personal needs, requirements, preferences etc. of an individual user Personalization can be divided into explicit and implicit personalization implicit personalization is guided/managed solely by the personalization system (server) explicit personalization is user-defined and managed by the user (or system, or device) What is Personalization Management?

  9. Personalization Management is often associated to an implicit system that guides, controls and maintains the whole personalization process In this thesis the notion ’personalization management’ is extended to explicit personalization in a manner the user can also guide, control and maintain the process What is Personalization Management?

  10. User Interfaces Attribute Management Personalization Reference Point Service Discovery Attribute Exchange Management Messages Conceptualization of Personalization Management PAL MA PIMS MPs Lectio Praecursoria

  11. Conceptualization of Personalization Management Personalization Manager Intelligence Context Manager User Profile Local Activity Situated User Profile Environment Data Service Profile System Messages (MFU, NFU) INSIDE PFU

  12. UI Prototype examples Form UI (main) Canvas UI (main) Form UI (customization) Form UI (search of a product based on a criteria) Form UI (function menu of a person service)

  13. Conclusions • An User-Centric Approach to Personalization Management and Service Provisioning • enables user-driven management of personal information • applies both explicit and implicit personalization • integrates contextual and situation-dependant information to personal information management and service provisioning • Is a complete personalization scheme, built on user demand and on user requirements, taking account also the different parameters of network performance • Provides a basis for faster adoption of personalization technologies and new services
