  1. KP6 Initiative: Network of Excellence European Network to Promote Research into Uncommon Cancers in Adults and Children: Pathology, Biology, and Genetics of Bone Tumours

  2. Research topic addressed • Establishing facilities and developing initiatives for the exploitation of research on bone cancer in Europe • Encouraging the development of evidence based guidelines for good clinical practice and improved public health strategies by accelerating the translation of existing research results into applications • Supporting translational research aimed at bringing basic knowledge through to applications in clinical practice and public health

  3. EuroBoNeT • 12 countries • 24 participants • Kick off 8-02-2006

  4. Integration objectives • Training and education • Standardisation in technology • Share of material • Web based sharing of information and communication • Translational research

  5. Spreading excellence objectives Coordinated by Treviso • Courses on bone pathology and molecular biology • Standard Operation Protocols • Web-based discussion forums

  6. Strategic objectives • Cross-discipline research on bone tumours • expertise • technology • numbers of material • Integrating dispersed skills • Integrating technology • Collaboration with small and intermediate sized companies • specialised in making technology available for direct standardised research and clinical usage

  7. Research objectives • Work packages on: Cartilaginous Tumours (Leiden) Osteogenic Tumours (Munster) Giant Cell Tumours (Oxford) Ewing Sarcoma (Bologna)

  8. Cartilaginous Tumours • Biology of central and peripheral chondrosarcoma • Benign cartilage tumours as a model for cartilage differentiation • Multiple osteochondromas (MO) • In vitro models of cartilage and bone differentiation in comparison with bone and cartilage neoplasia. Chondrocyte cell biology: Mortality and immortality & Mesenchymal stem cell differentiation

  9. Osteogenic Tumours • Biology and genetics of osteosarcoma • Drugresponse and pharmacogenomics in osteosarcoma • Osteolytic malignant lesions; improvement of knowledge on MFH, fibrosarcoma and chordoma

  10. Giant Cell Tumours • Biology of giant cell tumours of bone • Molecular mechanisms of osteoclastogenesis • Paget's diseaseof bone and secondary sarcomas

  11. Ewing Sarcoma • Biology of Ewing sarcoma • Immunotherapy of Ewing sarcoma • Drugresponse, pharmacogenomics and targeted therapy in Ewing sarcoma

  12. G. Bacci

  13. Key partners are represented by • Soft tissue and Bone Pathology group of the EORTC/EOI • Bone and Soft Tissue Working group of the European society of Pathology (ESP) • International Society of Bone and Soft Tissue Pathology • Connective Tissue Oncology Society (CTOS) • European Muscle Skeletal Oncologic Society (EMSOS) • International Skeletal Society (ISS)
