How we really use the web • We don’t read > we SCAN pages • We look for key words : FREE, SALE, SEX, etc • We don’t make the best choice, we make the very first OPTIMAL choice
MAKE IT CLEAR • Create a clear visual hierarchy • MOST IMPORTANT > IMPORTANT > UNRELATED • Create visual hierarchies: newspaper example • Use conventions • First paragraph: usually give the resume of the paper • Make it obvious what’s clickable
NO POINTLESS WORDS • Get rid of any extra words because: • Reduce the noise level of the page • Makes the useful words more important • Makes the page shorter • Happy talk: • Delete it all! • NO INSTRUCTIONS
Clickable and Easy HOME button • Give straight directions on where you can find the information you need • Have a HOME button so you can always go back • Easy to click Easy to click
The 4 W’s • Home page should Answer the 4 questions: • What is this? • What do they have here? • What can I do here? • Why should I be here and not somewhere else?
Tagline’s importance • Use a tagline > clear and informative
