  2. Geography of Singapore • Singapore’s primary strip of land is PulauUjong (pictured) • Surrounding territory includes smaller islands • It is 1 degree north of the equator and is part of the tropical rainforest climate zone.

  3. Economy of Singapore Singapore runs off of an open business market and is free of corruption, for the most part

  4. Religion in Singapore • Singapore is religiously tolerant, however Buddhism is the most prominent religion, making up 33% of the population. • Islam and Muslim are also common • Social Studies classes a teach about religious riots to show what could happen if not for equality

  5. Clothing of Singapore • One of the first Southeast Asian countries to sell the best international brands in local stores • Has fashion week where world famous designers come to show off their finest creations • A popular dress worn by women there is called the bajukurung

  6. Government of Singapore • The Republic of Singapore is made up of the president and parliament which includes the prime minister • The President is Tony Tan Keng Yam • President is directly voted in by popular vote

  7. Music of Singapore • Popular type of music is Peranakan folk music which is a fusion of English and Malay tunes • Pop music became huge in the 1960’s • Known for rock and punk music

  8. Food of Singapore • Influenced by South Asia and western styles of food • Most foods eaten out are eaten at Hawker centers( food courts) • Chili crab is a famous dish

History of Singapore • Singapore was occupied by Japan during World War 2 • SookChing Massacre- 70,000 Chinese died because when Japan occupied Singapore they found their environment hostile because of the Chinese • Merged with Malaysia in 1963 • Became independent from Malaysia because of tension in 1965

Art and literature of Singapore • Famous works- Singaand Rhythms: A Singaporean Millennial Anthology of Poetry • Earliest publishing of literature from Singapore was in 1830 • Host’s annual Singapore Art Festival open to international and local artists for music, dance, theater, drawing, etc…

  11. Currency of Singapore • 1 Singapore dollar = .8 US dollars • Has coins of 1, 5, 10, 20, 50 cents,and $1 • President on dollars is Yusof Bin Ishak • The Singapore $10,000 bank note is one of the worlds most valuable tender
