French Revolution • Warm-up • What was an important effect of the American Revolution? • France lost control of North America • Americans recognized the rights of slaves • The French were able to draw inspiration from the American Revolution • The British could repay all of their war debts • What was one major impact of the French Revolution? • Belief in the Divine right of Kings was strengthened • Protestants broke away from the Catholic Church • Europeans avoided armed conflict • Divine Right of Kings was not longer accepted

Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) • Rise to Power • Under Napoleon’s leadership • France was involved in constant warfare with all of Europe • French armies were extremely successful on the battle field • Acted as “Liberators” helping people of other countries to defeat their rulers

Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) • Fall of Napoleon • Invasion of Russia • Napoleon built the Grand Army of 600,000 soldiers • Invaded in 1812 • Defeated the Russians but Tsar Alexander I refused to suffered • The harsh Russian winter severely hurt the army (Hunger, suicide) Very few soldiers were left alive • Napoleon was forced to retreat in defeat
Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) • Fall of Napoleon • Napoleon went into exile after the Russian defeat • Reappeared in March of 1815 to briefly take over France again • He was finally defeated at the Battle of Waterloo in June 1815 • He was imprisoned on a remote island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean where he died in 1821
