Case studies Objective 1. To test and evaluate the decision support system (DSS) by applying it to 5 case studies in different geographical regions
Case studies - synthesis and generalization Objective 2. To integrate the results and experiences from the cases to European scale Strong interactions with stakeholders on both regional and European level are necessary to ensure the relevance and applicability of the final results
Case studies • The DSS focus is on chemical status • Areas of EQS exceedance • Areas where the concentrations increase in time The primary goal of the WFD is to achieve good ecological and chemical status of surface water bodies by 2015 For chemical status this means that the concentrations of the priority substances in water do not exceed the environmental quality standards (EQS)

Case studies • Based on the joint methods and reporting routines within SOCOPSE • -Update inventories, identify main PS sources (using SFA) • Define potential management options (based on the inventory developed) • Evaluate costs and benefits for different management options (DSS) • Interact with stakeholders (during whole process) • Use experiences to improve the DSS
Case study areas • The five case studies which represent different geographical regions of Europe as well as different scales • The five cases have different characteristics in terms of pollution sources and degree of contamination of priority substances
