Objectives At the end of this presentation, you will: • be able to fulfil the role of Area Warden in accordance with the University’s Emergency Management Procedure • know where to get additional information

Day-to-day roles of Area Wardens and Deputies • Become familiar with your area • Participate in the development of your area’s Local Emergency Instructions (LEIs) • Larger buildings sometimes dividedinto several fire alarm zones • Get to know • - local First Aiders- Wardens of adjacent areas- your Campus Warden • Location of fire panel varies • Alarm tones can vary • Clarify any uncertainty • Know the location of yourDesignated Assembly Point (DAP)
Day-to-day roles of Area Wardens and Deputies • Assist in training staff in LEIs • Have means to lock down your building • Assist in maintaining clear evacuation routes • Organise for a Deputy Warden during absences • Take note of people with mobility/sensory impairments • Participate in evacuation drills (including completing Evacuation Drill Reports)
Day-to-day roles of Area Wardens and Deputies • Area Wardens and Deputies need: • A yellow helmet or yellow vest • A whistle • A portable torch • Contact Risk, Health and Safety (Ext 8305) if you do not have this equipment
Emergency responsibilities of Area Wardens and Deputies Indemnity of Area Wardens and Deputies Area Wardens are acting in the course of their employment. The University therefore accepts the legal and financial consequences of all actions performed in good faith by AreaWardens and deputies or performed by other people under their instruction.
Emergency responsibilities of Area Wardens and Deputies General emergencies Legitimate instruction If the automatic alarm sounds in your building, • immediately initiate an evacuation of your Area. • Follow instructions from: • Emergency Services • Campus Warden or • Deputy Campus Warden
Emergency responsibilities of Area Wardens and Deputies Special emergencies No instruction Some sign of an incident or problem (e.g. alarming smell, sound, behaviour, etc) • Investigate the problem and its possible impact on the safety of people in your Area • Preserve your safety at all times

Module 1 – Question 1 Whilst conducting your normal activities, you notice a burnt smell. On investigation, you find a piece of bread stuck in the lunch-room toaster and emitting smoke. You Initiate an immediate evacuation and call 000 Switch off the toaster and ventilate the room Try to find whoever is responsible for this mess 1 2 3
Incorrect. The piece of burnt toast does notcreate an immediate danger, but it does require somecorrective action. As switching the toaster offdoes not present risks to your safety, do soand ventilate the room to preventthe alarm going off. Building evacuations At the Designated Assembly Point (DAP) • Report to Emergency Services if • any person did not evacuate • Ensure DAP is safe and move • group if necessary • Keep people at DAP in a group • Determine whether anyone • is missing • Forbid smoking

Building lockdowns When to lock down a building • If the Campus Warden, Deputy Campus Warden or a member of the Emergency Services instructs you to do so • If you believe it is the safest course of action
Building lockdowns How to lock down a building • Call *6911 or 5327 6911 • Lock all entry points and windows • Conduct Area search and instruct occupants to stay inside, away from windows • Await instructions from Campus Warden, Deputy or Emergency Services
Bomb threats What to do If a bomb threat is immediate, specific and concerns your Area: • Evacuate your Area and prevent re-entry • Call *6911 or 5327 6911
Bomb threats Bomb threat evacuations • Encourage people to take personal belongings • Consider the risk that evacuation route and DAP may be target of bomb • Leave doors and windows open • Assemble people 150 metres or more away from building
Medical emergencies What to do • The cause of injury or illness may require emergency response • Call UB First Aider • Call *6911 if ambulance required • Provide assistance: • Direct ambulance to scene • Keep onlookers away • Shield casualty from weather
Bushfire • Bushfire prevention program in place • Mt Helen campus is closed on Code Red days (others remain open) • Any campus under bushfire threat will be evacuated early
