SBQ Nov 2010 The attitude of Kaiser William II to war and peace
Kaiser William II did not want war Kaiser William II came to throne in 1888 and reigned until his fall at the end of World War I in 1918. He was known for his militaristic manner and was determined to make Germany a Powerful nation if not better than Great Britain through the adoption of weltpolitik or ‘world policy’. His ambitions, actions and policies to achieve political and economic ends particularly in Morocco and Near East did showed how aggressive he was towards France and Britain. Nevertheless, he was also believed to be a supporter of peace within limits and value the danger of war. Although the claim that Kaiser William II did not want war seems convincing, his actions to push Austria into war and the belief war with France was inevitable could possibly reflect his actual attitude to war and peace.
Body paragraph (group the sources) Sources A and D clearly support the hypothesis because… • He was supporter of peace • He sought peace in the Balkans and went to war reluctantly Other:- William II was a dominant ally of Austria William II saw diplomacy very much as determined by a monarch
Body paragraph (group the sources) Source B, C and E oppose the hypothesis Because… • He insisted Austria to take strong action in the Balkans • War with France was inevitable • His descriptions implied him as ‘warmonger’, great desire to conquer the world
Body paragraph (group the sources) Source D and E show both points in support and against the hypothesis because… • His constant communication with Tsar of Russia was an attempt to pacify the diplomatic problem with Russia • The ‘Willy-Nicky’ telegram interpreted as a way for Kaiser to deceive the Tsar
