1. What is Biology? • The study of life • Science that seeks to understand the living world
2. All living things… • All living things made of cells • All living things reproduce • All living things are based on the genetic code • All living things grow and develop • All living things obtain and use energy • All living things respond to their environment • All living things maintain a stable internal environment • All living things change over time
3. MS. Glinke’s Fabulous Four • GROWTH – All living things grow and change over time • REPRODUCTION – All living things must be able to make more of themselves * All living things must come from other living things! • RESPONSE – All living things respond to stimuli • METABOLISM – All the chemical reactions that take place in an organism (ENERGY)
4. To be considered living… • All living things must have all characteristics of living things • You can not have 3 out of the 4 and be considered living
5. What is a cell? • A CELL is the basic unit of structure and function in an organism. • All living things are made of cells!\ • Basic unit of life!
6. Unicellular vs. Multicellular * Unimeans one, so unicellular means organisms made up of only one cell * Multi means many, so multicellular means organisms made up of many cells
7. Asexual Reproduction • Asexual reproduction is where the new organism has one parent • Asexual reproduction occurs in both some plants and animals • Example: HYDRA
8. Sexual Reproduction • Cells from two different parents unite to produce the first cell of the new offspring • There are TWO parents • Example: HUMANS, BIRDS and CATS
9. Metabolism • Any chemical reaction that takes place • The combination of chemical reactions through which an organism builds up or breaks down materials as it carries out its life processes • Examples: Photosynthesis (PLANTS) and Eating fruits and vegetables (ANIMALS)
10. What is a stimulus? • All living things are going to respond to stimuli or changes in their environment • Stimulus: A signal to which an organism responds • Examples: Roots grow down in response to gravity, you sweat when you get too hot and flowers grow towards light.
Eye Demonstration • Eye Demonstration: Working with a partner, have one partner shut their eyes and wait 30 seconds. When 30 seconds is up, the partner with their eyes open should watch the partner’s eyes who were closed. What do you notice? Switch roles and do this again.

What is homeostasis? • 13. All organisms want to maintain stable internal body environment • 14. Example: * What does your body do when it’s hot? * What does your body do when it’s cold?
15. What is the main source of energy for all living things?
Autotrophs and Heterotrophs • Autotrophs: Organism that has the ability to make its own food. • Example in #15? • Heterotroph: Organism that does not have the ability to make its own food. • Example in #15?
