  2. Rules when adding on a number line • You add a positive number by moving right. • You add a negative number by moving left. Ex: 2 + - 1 Ex: - 3 + 2 -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3

  3. Rules of addition • Same Sign Rules • Add and keep the sign • Opposite Sign Rules • Subtract and keep the sign of the largest number

Rules for addition and subtraction • If there is a minus in the middle (and only the middle) change the middle sign to a plus and the sign that comes after. • If the sign in the middle is a plus then you • Add if the signs are the same • Subtract if the signs are different(keep the sign of the largest number)
