Roadmap • What is Tor? • Who made Tor? • How does Torwork? • Who uses Tor? • How well does Tor work? • Hidden Services • Tor and the NSA • The Dark Side of Tor • Questions?
What is Tor? • Tor or TOR? • Open Source • Funded by DoD, EFF, Google, … • Mission • Make anonymity possible. • The internet should not automatically broadcast all of our information, we should be able to choose what information we want to share.
Who made Tor? • The Tor Project is a non-profit organization • Creator of • Tor Browser • Tails OS • Orbot • Tor is based on Onion Routing • Concept developed originally by the U.S. Navy. • http://www.onion-router.net/
How Does Tor Work? • Onion Routing • A protocol developed by the U.S. Navy • A packet is sent through a series of nodes. • Each node removes a “layer” of encryption.
How Does Tor Work? • TLS Link encryption • Tor Relays • User owned/run • Listed in the Tor main directory • Bridge Relays • User owned/run • Not listed in the main directory
Who Uses Tor? All Users
Who Uses Tor? • Human Rights Activists • Anonymity is important for safety. • Anonymity allows for the “word” to get out. • Businesses • Spy on competition • Governments • Law Enforcement
Who Uses Tor? • Private Citizens • Bloggers • Sick People • Consumers • Oppressed Users • 8 year olds • …
How well does Tor work? • It does what it claims to do. • Provides some anonymity. • Does not guarantee anonymity. • Susceptible to • End to End correlation • Man in the Middle Attacks • Tor vs Proxies
Hidden Services • Hidden services are the “Deep web/Dark web” • Really they are just anonymous websites/services accessible using only Tor. • Silk Road is an example of these.
Tor and the NSA • Has Tor been compromised? • Not that we can tell. • “We will never be able to de-anonymize all Tor users all the time but with manual analysis we can de-anonymizea very small fraction of Tor users” • Instead, we’ll just make Tor hard to use. • “GOAL: Degrade Tor experience”
The Dark Side of Tor • The Silk Road • Was run by Ross William Ulbricht. • Generated 9.5 million BTC in sales($2.1 BILLION) • Silk Road itself received ~$90 million in commission.
The Dark Side of Tor • Silk Road’s transactions • Drugs, Hitmen, Weapons, Paraphernalia, Child Pornography, Money laundering, …
The Dark Side of Tor • Silk Road Takedown • Tor was not compromised. • Ross William Ulbricht made a mistake! • Asked a Tor-specific question on Stack Exchange while logged into the wrong account.
The Dark Side of Tor • Ulbricht is charged with drug trafficking, and multiple other charges related to running the Silk Road. • He is also charged with hiring a hitman. • The FBI seized $28.5 million in Bitcoins from Ulbricht. • He claims he’s innocent.
The other Dark Side of Tor • “The Black Market: Reloaded” • Another Silk Road type website. • Is Tor at fault for making these sites possible? • Are the pros of Tor enough to outweigh the cons?
