Warm Up: • Solve. How did you clear the fraction? • x= 9 3 • 2. Solve. What process do you use to clear fractions when solving proportions? • x = 18 • 9 3
COLLECT WARMUPS!!! • Warm Up: • Solve. How did you clear the fraction? • x= 9 x = 27 3 Multiply by the denominator • 2. Solve. What process do you use to clear fractions when solving proportions? • x = 18x = 54 • 9 3 Multiply using cross products • then divide by the coefficient of x.
Objectives: • Students will be able to: • Solve equations using proportions. • Create equations with one variable and use them to solve multi-step problems.
Multi-Step Equations with Fractions/Decimals and Algebraic Proportions Equations with Fractions/Decimals: Steps: 1. Clear parentheses by using the distributive property. 2. If there are fractions or decimals, clear them by multiplying by the lowest common denominator (lowest decimal place value for decimal numbers). 3. Combine like terms on each side of the equal sign. 4. Add or subtract to isolate the variable 5. Multiply or Divide to isolate the variable
Example 1: Multiply by 7 to clear the fraction. . Solve like other equations. 6x = -30 x = -5
Example 2: 28 – 2.2y = 11.6y + 262.6 Multiply by 10 (since lowest decimal is tenths place). 280 – 22y = 116y + 2626. Solve. -138y = 2346 y = -17
Algebraic Proportions: Steps: • Cross multiply • Distribute • Combine like terms • Add or subtract to isolate the variable • Multiply or divide to isolate the variable
Example 1: 7(x + 4) = 5(x – 2) 7x + 28 = 5x – 10 -5x = -5x 2x + 28 = – 10 -28 = -28 2x = – 38 x = -19
Example 2: 5(x+2) = 14(x) Now you solve!
Example 3: Rewrite as Now you solve!
