D IP YOUR TOE IN THE WATER D ECIDEwhat content needs to be mastered TESTING THE WATER – PRETEST BEFORE TEACHING
Who is that sitting on the edge of the pool? Why don’t they want to dive?
Maybe they can’t swim… The pre-testing will tell you if there is material which needs to be taught before you commence the unit Or whether there are some students who should be exempted from it and given a different assignment
Maybe they can already dive but are perfectionists and afraid to risk giving anything but a perfect performance
Maybe they imagine the task is too huge ... And need to be shown how to break the task down to manageable parts
DEGREES OF DIFFICULTY Differentiation allows you to cater for varying ability levels simultaneously
I NDIVIDUAL PROGRAMS Differentiation allows you to individualize your program Eg by using Bloom’s Taxonomy / Multiple Intelligences Grids
V ERTICAL Level of starting can be varied
E XTENSION Using the same starting springboard material can be extended in differing directions
G ROUPING Differentiation can allow groups of similar ability the benefit of working together
What if a student wants to work way beyond the class and above the teacher’s level of expertise? Don’t be afraid of finding a mentor or an outside program to meet their need They deserve the opportunity to work at their level of mastery and fulfill their potential.
