  1. Danish Astronomy Committee (”Astronomisk Udvalg”): • Appointed by: The Faculties of Science at CU and AU, and DNSC • Task: Prepare long-term strategic plans for Danish astronomy • First report: ”The Future of Danish Astronomy” (2003) Members 2005-7: J. Andersen, NBI (Chair) J. Christensen-Dalsgaard, IFA J.V. Clausen, NBI S. Hannestad, IFA J. Hjorth, NBI A. Hornstrup, DNSC H. Kjeldsen, IFA (Vice-Chair) N. Lund, DNSC (now retired) Å. Nordlund, NBI J. Andersen DFS/astronomy meeting, Nyborg, June 19, 2007

  2. Danish Astronomy 2007-2017 New report now completed: ”Danish Astronomy 2007 - 2017” Underlying questions: • What do we want Danish astronomy to be in 2012, 2017 ? • What results would we then like to see from this report ? • What has happened since 2003, and what remains to be done ? • What changes have happened in DK science and policies ? • What is happening in Europe (OPTICON, ASTRONET, ...) ? • What should be planned, and what should better not be ? Changes: DARK, DASC, DARS,.. Fusions (DNSC/DTU) New leadership (deans, ESO,…) More money (TBC…) OWL ->> ELT … J. Andersen DFS/astronomy meeting, Nyborg, June 19, 2007

  3. Danish Astronomy 2007-2017 Recommendations I: • Emphasize international context (ESO, ESA, key role of IDA) • Focus science on same four basic areas (Cosmology; life cycle of matter in gas, stars & planets; extreme astrophysics; interdisciplinary fields) • Staff renewal programme: • Net loss of tenured staff since 2003 • Another 13 retirements to follow in decade ->> long-term plan • New style of education ->> staff getting saturated, lose momentum • Specific recommendations: NBI: Full professor in ”life cycle of matter” NBI & IFA: Assoc. professors in ALMA-related fields DNSC: ”Normal” strength of scientific staff in astrophysics J. Andersen DFS/astronomy meeting, Nyborg, June 19, 2007

  4. Danish Astronomy 2007-2017 Recommendations II: • Intensify coordination in education in concert with physics More hands-on courses, technical & management Harmonise course structure between universities ! ”Astronomy 101”, upgrade courses for teachers • Appoint Working Group to study the future of instrumentation Proper science underpinning of projects (=staff !) European/global context vital (ASTRONET Roadmap) Critical mass (ELT, SKA,…) Training • Further improve coordination, statistics, outreach • Renew membership of DAC / AU -- meeting(s) followup in 2008 J. Andersen DFS/astronomy meeting, Nyborg, June 19, 2007
