Public Enemy Number 1 • First used in the early 1930’s by Frank Loesch to describe individuals who were criminals and extremely dangerous • Know used as the FBI Ten Most Wanted List • Loesch said he started using the phrase: • "I had the operating director of the Chicago Crime Commission bring before me a list of the outstanding hoodlums, known murderers, murderers which you and I know but can’t prove, and there were about one-hundred of them, and out of this list I selected twenty-eight men. I put Al Capone at the head and his brother next, and ran down the twenty-eight, every man being really an outlaw. I called them Public Enemies, and so designated them in my letter, sent to the Chief of Police, the Sheriff every law enforcing officer. The purpose is to keep the publicity light shining on Chicago's most prominent, well known and notorious gangsters to the end that they may be under constant observation by the law enforcing authorities and law abiding citizens.“

  4. Alphonse “Al” Capone • Born January 17, 1899 in New York • Member of two “Kid gangs” • Nicknamed “Scarface” • Was sent to New York to cool off and became Boss after John Torrio attempted assassination • Reported income of $100,000,000 a year

  5. St. Valentine’s Day Massacre • February 14, 1929 • Owned by rival George “Bugs” Moran • Capone’s men dressed like police officers and killed 7 men • More than 150 bullets fired

  9. Capone in Jail • Capone started in Atlanta but took over • Sent to Alcatraz and became model prisoner • Had some symptoms of Syphilitic Demenita • Died January 25, 1947 from cardiac arrest

John Dillinger • Born June 22, 1903 in Indianapolis • Joined Navy but deserted in Boston • Pleaded guilty to a robbery and spent 8 ½ years in jail (very upset) • Dillinger escaped from the Indiana State Prison • Later Dillinger escaped from the “unescapable” Crown Point jail with a wooden gun

Dillinger Cont. • Anna Sage, who worked at a brothel in Indiana, helped to give information to the police • Dillinger and two ladies went to the Biograph Theater to watch a Clark Gable Movie • Dillinger tried to escape but was shot 3 times and died later in a Hospital on January 22, 1934 • This was the beginning of the end of the Gangster Era

  17. Lester M. Gillis aka“Baby Face” Nelson • December 6, 1908 in Chicago, Illinois • 5’4” tall and weighed 133 pounds • Given the nickname because of his Juvenile appearance • Escaped while being transported between jails • Became connected with Dillinger gang in 1933

  18. Helen Gillis (Nelson’s Wife) • Killed special agents Hollis and Crowley (responsible for Dillinger death) in a gun battle • Nelson was also injured during the battle and died later that evening on November 27, 1934

  22. Bonnie ParkerClyde Champion Barrow

  23. Bonnie and Clyde • Met January 1930 • Bonnie was 19 and married to an imprisoned murderer; she never divorced him • Clyde was 21 and unmarried • By their death, considered to have committed 13 murders and several robberies and burglaries

  25. Bonnie and Clyde • Helped with a jail break of 5 prisoners at the Eastham State Prison Farm in Texas • Bonnie and Clyde were found to be hidden by the Methvin family and were eventually killed May 23, 1934 while trying to drive away in Louisiana • Around 170 shots fired, about 50 hit them

  28. George Kelly Burns “Machine Gun” • Born July 18, 1895 in Memphis, TN • Poor Student whose highest Grade (C+) was in good physical hygiene • Started as a bootlegger • Married Young but could not make enough money legally to support his family

  29. Kelley • Married Kathryn Thorne, an accomplished criminal, and took his status to the next level, eventually becoming “Public Enemy #1” • Would take cartridges from her husbands gun and distribute them throughout the underworld • Interesting to note, it is said he never killed anyone

Kelley Phrase • During his arrest in Memphis, Kelley coined the phrase, “G-Men, please don’t shoot.” • Was given a Life sentence and when he threatened to break out, was sent by train to Alcatraz, where he was one of the first group of Prisoners. • He was AZ #117 • Died of a heart attack July 18, 1954, on his 59th birthday

  32. Pretty Boy Floyd • Born February 3, 1904 • Married with a son, but girlfriend in 1929 gave him the name “Pretty Boy” • From 1929-1934 carried out a string of 30 successful bank robberies

Kansas City Massacre • Chief Suspect along with Adam Richetti in killing 4 law officers, now found that he may not have been involved • FBI agent Melvin Purvis shot and killed Floyd outside a corn field on October 22, 1934. • 20,000 people attended his funeral, the largest in Oklahoma history
