  2. Vietnam is currently experiencing an outbreak of Hand, Foot, and Mouth disease • More than 57,000 children have been infected. • More than 2,000 new cases are being reported each week. • The death toll is currently at 111.

  3. Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease • Common in infants and children. • Viral infection caused by viruses that belong to the enterovirus genus (most commonly coxsackievirus) • Infection is spread via direct contact. Coxsackievirus

  4. Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease Initial Symptoms: fever, no appetite, sore throat, and runny nose. 5-7 days after exposure: blister-like rash on the hands, feet, and in the mouth.

  5. Complications of HFMD Typically caused by coxsackievirus: • Very mild disease • Clears within 10 days, usually without the need of medical assistance. So why have 111 children died in Vietnam as a result of HFMD?

  6. Enterovirus 71 • 1/3 of cases in Vietnam caused by a more severe strain: enterovirus 71. • While rare, complications include: paralysis, brain swelling, and death.

  7. Dealing with the Outbreak • Dozens of kindergartens have been shut down for cleaning and child-examinations. • Dr.’s are encouraging parents to keep a clean environment. • Cases and fatalities expected to rise through October.
