Safeguarding children Working together to safeguard children 2013 A national framework bound by legal stature that sets out the procedures to safeguard and promote the welfare of every child All individuals have a duty to work together with other agencies to safeguard and promote the welfare of all children
Working together to safeguard children 2013 Sharing information and maintaining inter-disciplinary relationships is essential to effective and safe practice These requirements are bound by legal statute- the children's acts 1989 and 2004
Safeguarding children Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children is defined as Protecting children from maltreatment Preventing impairment of children’s health or development Ensuring that children are growing up in circumstances consistent with the provision of safe and effective care And taking action to enable all children to have the best outcomes (Working together to safeguard children 2013)

Safeguarding adults Based on the department of health document from 2000 “No secrets” Take into account the Human Rights legislation Mental Capacity Act 2005 Deprivation of liberty safeguards All local authorities have their own policies and procedures
Vulnerable Adult definition A person aged over 18 In need of or in receipt of community services By reason of learning, physical, mental disability, or elderly and infirm And Who cannot protect him or herself from significant harm or exploitation
ABUSE “Abuse is the violation of an individual’s human and civil rights by another person or persons” (No Secrets section 2 ;p9)

Alert Anyone can raise an alert We all have a duty to recognize the signs and symptoms of abuse and to know how to respond to these concerns A concern is raised about the possible abuse of a vulnerable adult A vulnerable adult makes a disclosure of abuse The details of the alert should be recorded, including relevant dates names of vulnerable adult. Alleged abuser, details of injuries, vulnerability, details of alerter

Multi Disciplinary screening and Decision Is the safeguarding process to be followed Is the victim a vulnerable adult ? Is the referral in respect of third party abuse ? Does this matter require multi agency response Who will be lead coordinating agency Not safeguarding - care support planning, referral to other agencies
Background Information Gathering Background information checks conducted with other agencies in order to prepare for strategy meeting Checks conducted by lead coordinating agency –health or adult social care- you may be asked to provide information at this stage Risk assessment, Ensure interim protection plan
Strategy A meeting or discussion must take place between partner agencies this will include the police if a crime suspected Plan – and co-ordinate the investigation Agree lead investigating agency and scope of investigation Agree time scales Risk assessments and interim protection plan
Investigation Visit to vulnerable adult to obtain their consent to process Interview of vulnerable adult Police will lead any criminal investigation – adult social care, health and providers services may also investigate Interview potential witnesses Review of care records
Protection plan Should be with agreement of vulnerable adult A formal case conference may be held in order to agree the protection plan and finalize the process Outcomes recorded Feed back to the Alerter/vulnerable adult Agree improvement plans with providers
Review When the vulnerable adult remains at risk The protection plan should be reviewed in order to establish if plan is working The vulnerable adult may also be present at any review meetings
