  1. UB Citizens: Let’s get addicted to air quality data November 2012 December 2011 Photo Credit: Soyee Chiu Photo Credit: Lauren Knapp Christa Hasenkopf @UB_Air https://www.facebook.com/UBAirQuality

  2. What is PM? Dust Bioaerosol Volcanoes IkhNartiinChuluu Nature Reserve Research Camp, April 2005 Bacteria Combustion Sources Mt. St. Helens, 1980

  3. PM comes in a range of sizes Fine Human Hair PM10 (Diameter ≤ 10μm) ~ 50 μm PM2.5 (Diameter ≤ 2.5μm)

  4. PM and Health Effects WHOestimates the total number of PM-related deaths to be approximately 3.3 million/year world-wide. More than malaria + AIDS, combined. Very large > PM10 Coarse PM: PM2.5 < PM ≤ PM10 Fine PM: ≤ PM2.5

  5. UB air pollution From 2011 WHO Outdoor Air Pollution Database and Dec 2011 WB report: Air Quality Analysis of Ulaanbaatar

  6. UB air pollution According to 2011 WHO Outdoor PM10 survey, Ulaanbaatar is 2nd most PM10-polluted city in the world. From 2011 WHO Outdoor Air Pollution Database and Dec 2011 WB report: Air Quality Analysis of Ulaanbaatar

  7. UB air pollution From 2011 WHO Outdoor Air Pollution Database and Dec 2011 WB report: Air Quality Analysis of Ulaanbaatar

  8. UB air pollution From 2011 WHO Outdoor Air Pollution Database and Dec 2011 WB report: Air Quality Analysis of Ulaanbaatar

  9. Annual average skewed by wintertime levels On average, EVERY day in EVERY month except for 4 violate WHO Recommended PM levels. DAILY WHO Recommended level DAILY WHO Recommended level Nishikawa et al. (2011)

  10. Human Impacts By the Numbers • $ • 10-25% • 500 million Est. range of annual deaths in UB caused by PM(Allen et al., 2011 and World Bank 2011 ). Est. annual amount (in USD) lost from UB economy due to PM - 20%of UB’s 2008 GDP (World Bank 2011).

  11. My Research Questions: What is UB PM made of? What are the major sources of UB PM? How does black carbon change with time? How does UB PM affect regional climate?

  12. PEER UB Air Pollution Team: • Ms. Gerelmaa Gunchin ** However, the project I am about to describe is NOT FUNDED by NSF, USAID, or Fulbright. It is a public outreach initiative. It and has been done on free time because we feel it is IMPORTANT.** • Ms. DelgerzulLodoisamba • Dr. Dagva Shagjjamba • Prof. Lodoysamba • Kindergarten #69 Staff • Ms. BulgansaikhanBaldorj • EnkhiinSanaa • Family Hospital Staff • Mr. Amanjol

  13. Sharing Air Quality Data (and basics) through Social Media • Public awareness MATTERS! • (1) ACCESS to timely AQ data can help the public make informedhealth decisions. • (2) ACCESS to the available AQ data and basics EMPOWERSUB’ers to focus more effort on air quality monitoring.

  14. Mitigation measures are just half of the equation…. New Stoves Ger  Apts Alt. Fuels Modifying Ignition Electric Stoves

  15. Long-term, successful pollution reduction is feedback cycle: And the public can influence strengthening this cycle in UB! • Air quality monitoring • Mitigation Measures

  16. UB Air Quality in Social Media @UB_Air on twitter Ulaanbaatar Air Quality on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/UBAirQuality

  17. Tweet and Facebook post BREAKDOWN: Posts at 9 am, 2pm, and 7pm

  18. Tweet and Facebook post BREAKDOWN: Posts at 9 am, 2pm, and 7pm

  19. Tweet and Facebook post BREAKDOWN: Posts at 9 am, 2pm, and 7pm Have more questions? Tweet @UB_Air, check out UBAirPollution.org, or post a question on theFacebook Page: “УБAгаарынЧанарынМэдээ/UB Air Quality Info!”

  20. Simple Infographics

  21. Interact with the public on air pollution issues • We share people getting involved in air pollution activities (like UBASC) • People share information • People ask questions

  22. How the public access to data shapes air quality monitoring PM2.5 PM10 = just 0.12% of Beijing’s population. More transparent data

  23. How the public access to data shapes UB air quality monitoring • Within 6 weeks of having these sites running and because of the show of public support: • - Received international and local media attention • - Met/Scheduled with community leaders to discuss air quality • - And some more good news at the end….

  24. The PUBLIC has influenced this cycle! But this needs to just be the beginning… • Air quality monitoring • Mitigation Measures

  25. What can YOU do? • (1) Get informed and involved. “Like” ‘Ulaanbaatar Air Quality’ on FB and follow @UB_Air on Twitter. https://www.facebook.com/UBAirQuality

  26. What can YOU do? • (2) Get your friends informed and involved. “Share” ‘Ulaanbaatar Air Quality’ on FB and follow @UB_Air on twitter. Help them out if they don’t understand something! https://www.facebook.com/UBAirQuality

  27. What can YOU do? • (3) Invite UBASC to give a talk about this topic at your organization.

  28. What can YOU do? • (4) Give this talk yourself! (And let us know about it so we can brag about you!)

  29. What can YOU do? • (5) Request better, quality, rated masks in UB pharmacies. But wait...how??

  30. Surgical Masks: Designed to keep thewearer from spreading germsto others and protect the wearer from splashing fluids. How do Masks work? Typical Surgical Masks Cough Spray Mask Wearer

  31. Surgical Masks: Designed to keep thewearer from spreading germsto others and protect the wearer from splashing fluids. They are not designed to protect the wearer from germs! Dried Cough Spray Cough Spray Mask Wearer Mask Wearer

  32. Surgical Masks vs. PM Masks Surgical Masks are not designed to protect the wearer from PM! PM2.5 PM2.5 Mask Wearer Mask Wearer

  33. How do you know a PM mask works? • It is rated by an internationally-accepted standard • - Ex: “N95” rating by the USA: has been • Certified by an independent lab to • Remove 95% of PM 0.3 microns and • larger(so covers PM2.5 and PM10) • Does it fit well? • Vague/non-specific statements • like “removes smoke and dust” etc. • do not help you evaluate how • effective a mask is.

  34. The masks we’re handing out tonight:  3M masks, ordered through Amazon.com  ~1000-2000 Tugriks per mask  Recommended: Wear up to 2 weeks

  35. What can YOU do? • (5) Request better, quality, rated masks in UB pharmacies. But wait...how??

  36. What can YOU do? • (5) Request better, quality, rated masks in UB pharmacies…by explaining you want RATED masks to pharmacies. Show them the one we hand out today as an example!

  37. Update as of 31 Dec 2012: Great news! We have finalized a funding agreement between the Lodoysamba Research Group at the National University of Mongolia Great news! We have finalized a funding agreement between the Lodoysamba Research Group at the National University of Mongolia and Oyu Tolgoi LLC / ОюуТолгой ХХК to get our own automatically facebook-posting, tweeting air quality instrument! It won't be live for several months, but we're also excited that we will be collaborating with local air quality agencies, to automatically share data they collect, too! We are excited to have an instrument like this that will contribute to public knowledge of air pollution as well a provide a new way for students at NUM to get hands on experience with scientific equipment! Thank-you very much to Oyu Tolgoi for the funding! And thank YOU for supporting us - YOU, the UB public, helped make this happen!
