BUSINESS ENGLISH CHEQUES, CHEQUE BOOKS
WHAT IS A CHEQUE? • A written order directing a bank to pay money • A printed piece of paper you can sign and use instead of money
Order cheques • Payable only to the name of the payee • You will find „pay to the order of…..“ on the cheque
Bearer cheques • Payable to anyone who is in possession of the cheque • There does not have to be any name of a payee • Payable to the „bearer“, to „cash“ or „to the order of cash“
Counter cheques • Are used for withdrawals • Are usually left blank • When you run out of cheques • Before your cheques get available
Cheques usually contain • Cheque number • Date of issue • Place of issue • Amount of the money • Name of the payee • Signature of the drawer
Cheques usually contain • The word „cheque“ in the language in which the cheque was issued • Account number • Place where the cheque will be paid
Bank cheques • Drawn by a bank • On request of a person for another bank • Work as a cashless payment
Private cheques • The drawer is a person who has an account in a bank • Drawn on forms which are parts of a cheque book
Traveller´s cheques • Usually issued by banks or financial institutions • Drawn in most frequent world currencies • To make travelling easier
ADVANTAGES You´re always able to pay Paying for goods, accommodations etc. A cheap way of paying Bank checks the identity of the drawee DISADVANTAGES Fees Sometimes a long time before it is paid You have to keep your cheque book with you Advantages x disadvantages
