  1. Middle School BASICS

  2. Teams • Middle Schools are divided up into 4 teams of three to five classes. • Schools within a school. • Each team has a name Wolves, Orcas and Ravens

  3. DAILY SCHEDULE • There are 6 periods each day • Each period is 40-50 minutes in length • 5 core periods • 1 exploration period • Our schedule allows students to have flexible learning opportunities to integrate core curriculum areas.

  4. LEARNING TIME • Students have two parts to their learning • Explorations Learning Time (1 block per day) • Specialized courses taught by specialist teachers • Mix of students from their team • One block per day for 6 weeks (courses rotate) • Art • Technology Education • Home Arts (Cooking and sewing) • Music • Digital Literacy • Core Learning Time (5 blocks per day) • Academic Courses -French, Math, SS, Science & Language Arts • PE • Taught by their advisory teacher • Same class of students (Advisory class) • Blocks are flexible so that teachers can combine courses and adjust the time to meet the needs of learners.

EXPLORATIONS • Explorations Learning Time • Specialized courses taught by specialist teachers • Mix of students from their team • One block per day for 6 weeks (courses rotate) • Art • Technology Education • Home Arts (Cooking and sewing) • Music • Digital Literacy • Beginning (gr 6) and advanced band is offered as an extra exploration course before school 2 days per week for each band all year

  6. STUDENT SERVICE SUPPORT • The Student Service Team includes individuals who have specialties in the areas of ESL, gifted, skill development, learning disabilities, intellectual disabilities, behavior and counseling • Each team has a student service teacher to provide learning assistance for the students on that team • Support is provided both in and out of class • Our SEAs help support our low incidence students

  8. Pillars of Middle School • Advisory - Your advisory class is like your homeroom. The focus is on social and emotional learning under the guidance of your core teacher. • Teaming – You will be part of one of our four teams and will share classes with the same students and teachers. • Flexible Scheduling – Allows flexibility in the areas of grouping, scheduling and staffing to benefit students and the school • Integrated Curriculum – Promotes connection-making among fields of knowledge in order to help students understand the world around them. • Explorations - Provide students with the opportunity to learn with specialist teachers. All students take explorations courses and this helps them discover their interests and aptitudes.
