  3. Mercury Regulations EPA Portland Cement MACT: - First National Limits to Reduce Hg and Toxic Emissions - 92% Hg Emissions Reductions Existing/New Cement Kilns- Full Implementation By 2013 EPA Mercury Air Toxics Standards (MATS)- Released :February 16, 2012- Start Date: April 16, 2012- Coal and Oil Fired Electric Generating Units- 90% Hg Emissions Reductions Required By 2015

  4. Mercury Regulations • UNEP Global Mercury Emissions Treaty- 140 Countries- Governments unanimously decided to launch negotiations on an international mercury treaty- deal with world-wide emissions and discharges of a pollutant that threatens the health of millions,- Agreed risk to human health and environment was so significant that accelerated action needed - Toxic, persistent and subject to long-range transport - High levels of mercury in certain fish / human health concern - Complex issue with varied sources of mercury throughout the world • - Legally Binding Treaty By 2013 • Global Mercury Observations System-The Global Mercury Observation System (GMOS) is a five year project (2010-2015), funded by the European Commission 7th Framework Programme (DG Research)- 20 institutions from Europe, North and South Americas, Asia and Africa take part in the project • as well as ten external advisors. The project was launched in the fall of 2010 and is aimed at: - Establishment of a global monitoring system for mercury; • Improvement and validation of regional and global scale atmospheric mercury models; - Model application to evaluate source-receptor relationships, temporal trends and scenarios; - Development of interoperable system for dissemination of the project output data.

  8. Mercury Deposition in Precipitation 2010

  9. Mercury Deposition in Precipitation 2010 Mercury Wet Deposition – Pacific Northwest 2010

  10. The consistent cold temperatures and large amount of precipitation in the Olympic and Cascade ranges of Washington State are thought to enhance atmospheric deposition of contaminants. We measured total mercury and 28 organochlorine compounds in trout collected from 14 remote lakes in the Olympic, Mt. Rainer, and North Cascades National Parks. Mercury was detected in trout from all lakes sampled (15 to 262 μg/kg ww) median total and methyl mercury were 30.4 and 0.34 μg/kg dry (ww), our results suggest that local urban areas contribute to the observed contaminant patternsin these high elevation lakes, Specifically, the gene expression pattern leads us to hypothesize a role for mercury in disrupting the metabolic and reproductive pathways in fish from high elevation lakes in western Washington.
