‘Real’ material to get students’ attention Xavier Martin-Rubio
Teacher and Researcher Framework = • Socio-cultural SLA • CDA Tool for the analyses = *) Membership Categorisation Analysis on the qualitative data
Problem + Investment but – results English fluency no longer an extra in your CV Unmotivated, low self-esteem, anxiety
Why? Adverse socio-political context : • (banal) nationalist discourse – dominant • English in/outside the classroom – lack of opportunities Teachers are also “persons” (identities, ideologies) • Grammar obsession; teacher-centered • Unmotivated, burnt-out
What can be done? Change socio-political context (by participating in social practices and pushing for a new approach) More involvement, less rules Attitude rather than tools Goal. Get them to use the target language in meaningful contexts
Teaching ‘with an attitude’ • Real and recent material • Constantly update and innovate • Feedback • Grammar only when necessary • Create something useful • Controversy is welcome
