Description of experiment • How music and exercise impact a subject’s ability to complete math problems and memorize words
Process Diagram Music Exercise Words Recalled Percent of problems correct Noise: Mishearing, interruptions and mixing words with previous trials
Procedures • 1. Start Music/Exercise/Timer • 2. Read the words twice • 3. Ask math problems • 4. Recite back words from memory
Example of Test Material Red Cat Monkey Bank Pen Necklace Hold Beautiful Sad Bacon http://www.math-drills.com/multiop/mixed_operations_asmd_vertical_100_0120_0120_005.html
Coded Results Music Exercise Y = 6.356 - .8Xa + .606Xb + .45XaXb
Other results Words Math
Predictions Y = 7.25 - .75*-1 Y=.88 - .03*-1 Y = 6.356 - .8Xa + .606Xb + .45XaXb Y = 6.356 - .8*-1 + .606*0 + .45*-1*0
Conclusion • The exercise had a negative effect on remembering words, and no effect on math problems • The music had a positive effect on remembering words, and no effect on the math problems
Future Research • Different types of music • More words or a longer delay • More intense exercise • Compare genders
