  1. The DLI Survival Guide: An update Marie-Claire Lauzon Statistics Canada DLI Ontario Spring Training 2008 Carleton University, April 2, 2008

  2. Outline • The DLI Survival Guide • History • Content • Recent developments • Next steps • The New DLI Collection Interface

  3. DLI Survival Guide - History • Based on the “Brian McNally First Aid CD-ROM” which was produced by Elizabeth Hamilton and her team at the University of New Brunswick (UNB) • Primary intent of the work was to provide a quick reference guide for the librarian who dedicates a short amount of time to data services • Guide was then expanded to serve all of the DLI Contacts across Canada through the efforts of Jane Fry, Carleton University, and the DLI Unit at Statistics Canada • Chuck Humphrey, University of Alberta and Nancy Lemay, University of Ottawa, also contributed to the Guide

  4. Content and access Table of Contents 9 sections http://www.statcan.ca:8092/english/Dli/csk/power/toc/index-en.htm http://www.statcan.ca:8092/english/Datalib/csk/power/toc/welcome.htm Username: Framew0rK Password: newWebs1te

  5. Recent developments • Draft version of the Guide presented during the DLI National Training Day (May 2007) • DLI Unit received 100+ suggestions • Content, presentation, editorial • Incorporated these suggestions and translated the Guide • Posted an updated, password protected, version in a temporary location

  6. Recent developments • Last month, the Centre of Expertise on Accessibility reviewed the guide and provided accessibility related recommendations • Their recommendations led us to re-write and re-code certain sections of the Guide • Ex. • Replaced menu on right side with links at the top • Removed any instances of “click here” • Re-wrote expressions like “"Position your mouse over the link below" (not everyone uses a mouse)

  7. Next steps • April 14-18th: Dissemination Division’s search group will review and work on the Guide’s search features • April 21st-25th: The Guide will undergo TASS (Testing and Support Services Unit) testing • Examine how the Guide works in different browsers • Identify any broken links • Provide usability recommendations • We will then, implement the usability recommendations and release the Guide

  8. The New DLI Collection Interface • Being developed by IT specialists in the Dissemination Division • Jackie Godfrey is our DLI lead on the project • Will allow users to both browse and search the DLI collection • Will eventually replace our static DLI collection pages • Goal: Facilitate access to DLI data and metadata

  9. The New DLI Collection Interface • Interface is based on the Statistics Canada Analytical Studies module and pulls metadata from the Online Catalogue • Allows users to search or browse for metadata and data • By Survey • By Subject • By Date http://www.statcan.ca/dli/english/dli?&dfold=0&currpg=1&sfold=0&survfold=0

  10. Next steps • Continue to develop searching & browsing functionality • Finish the interface design • Test the application • Launch the prototype and use it with DLI static pages • Develop fully a independent version
