EDSE 337 Constructivist Lesson
Did you know marshmallows can be used to solve mathematical equations?
Remembering Area Use the toothpicks and marshmallows to construct a rectangle and a triangle.
Remembering Area How do we find the area of the rectangle we made? How do we find the area of the triangle we made? (We can use a ruler for measuring or think of the toothpicks as 1 unit.)
A builder needs help deciding the amount of siding and shingles required to complete the house. How can we help? Learning about Surface Area
To start, using the marshmallows and toothpicks, can you make a rectangular prism for the body of the house?
RECTANGULAR PRISM Can you find the area of all the rectangular prisms’ sides? (We can use a ruler for measuring or think of the toothpicks as 1 unit.)
Can you make a triangular prism using marshmallows and toothpicks for the roof of the house? Since we are making a house, make the dimensions of the base of the triangular prism the same size as the top of the rectangular prism.
TRIANGULAR PRISM Can you find the area of all the triangular prisms’ sides? (We can use a ruler for measuring or think of the toothpicks as 1 unit.)
Let’s Think What is surface area?
Now that we have all of these individual areas, how do we figure out the surface area of the house?Do all sides of the triangular prism and rectangular prism contribute to the surface area of the house? Let’s Think
EXTENSION:Add a cubic attached garage to your house and determine the new surface area.
