Welcome Background to the workshop: • revalidation and the external examiner • employability and the HE curriculum • a community of practitioners
Today’s goals • us: who we are and why we are here • discussions: ideas, problems and solutions • taking things forward: support network
Employability in HE • KIS / DLHE – drivers for university curriculum • work-based learning an important curriculum dimension • ‘offer’, fees, economics • ‘exit velocity’, aspiration, confidence • pressure to get it right!
Our revalidation • determination to radically alter the student experience around employability • employability spine throughout the 3 years • level 5 & WRL/WBL • ‘mandatory choice’ • roll out of level 4 (2011-12); levels 5 & 6 (2012-13)
Student choice • 50 credits placement, or • 30 credits project management + 2 options, or • 10 credits work-related learning + 4 options • 19 politics students opting for placement in 2012-13 (30% of cohort)
Politics placement • 50 credits • second semester, second year • 8 weeks / 200 hours • unpaid • first roll-out January 2013
assessment Assessment: 2 pieces of course work plus an employer’s report: • 1000 word project plan • 6000 word webfolio • review of tasks undertaken during the placement • role of politics in the experience of the workplace • reflective account of the skills developed • slides for a 10 minute presentation about experience • The employer will provide a report on attendance and performance whilst on placement which will be awarded a pass/fail mark Structured support towards assessment in the form of a workbook
process • choose option stream in Level 4 (April) • placement area request form (1st to 3rd choice) (May) • placement team/ employer engagement team/academic contacts - match (summer) • placement team oversee self-organising (summer/autumn) • confirmation of match (mid October) • University liaison with provider (prior to summer & autumn) • commencement of placement (January/February)
student expectations • an insight into working life in a related area of my prospective career. • some skills which are more applicable in working life in comparison to some I have developed whilst at uni • I hope that whoever I shadow or follow can help provide an environment that is both as relevant as it can be whilst I am learning about the job.
challenges to come.... • making them happen • managing expectations • monitoring progress • making them meaningful • marking assessed work • ensuring sustainability
