Why should a cardiology fellow get in the field of iCMR? Mounir RIAHI, MD. Montreal Heart Institute at Interventional cardiac magnetic resonance workshop, SCMR 2014.
Interventional cardiology has entered a new era: • Structural acquired heart disease. • Congenital heart disease. • While device development is increasing. Imaging is still lagging behind. • Clinical outcomes are good but can be improved with better guidance and real-time functional assessment.
Do no harm Picano, E. Heart 2010;96:269e274.
Do no harm • As a clinician entering the field of structural intervention, ihave several concerns: • Patient safety: radiation (specially pediatrics and congenital). • Personal Safety: • Radiation (e.g. cerebral neoplasia). • Musculoskeletal injury (lead aprons). PicanoE, European Heart Journal (2006) 27, 2703–2708
Aim for better • Tissue characterization and soft tissue contrast. • Per-procedural functional assessment. • Multiplanar imaging : better 3D representation. * *:http://europace.oxfordjournals.org/content/early/2009/02/04 **: www3.gehealthcare.com/ **
On a more personal level • Exciting field combining: • Intellectual skills (Physics). • Technicalskills. • Large potential for R&D • Hardware. • Software.
