Program Impaction Program impaction means that the number of applications from eligible students to a major far exceeds the number of spaces available in that major. Public Health For students interested in promoting positive activities that impacts the health of individuals, groups & communities. • Health Educator • Public Policy Maker • Health Care Administration Management
Exercise Science For students interested in a strong bioscience-based study. Prepares students for post graduate studies in Exercise Science or Allied Health. This major can lead to advanced credentials in a variety of health careers: Medicine, Physical Therapy, Physician Assistant, Dentistry, Pharmacy, etc.
Food Science & Technology For students interested in a career in the food industry: focus is on food safety, food technologies, quality assurance, etc. • Health Inspection (USDA) • Food Technologist • Quality Assurance Manager
Kinesiology Focus on exercise & movement. Degree Options: • Exercise & Human Performance (Physical Fitness Trainer) • Rehabilitation & Therapeutic Exercise (Career path to physical therapy or occupational therapy) • Community Leadership(Management positions recreation centers) • Subject Matter Preparation for Single Subject Teaching Credential with emphasis in: • Physical Education (K-12 students) • Adapted Physical Education (K-12 children with special needs)
Nutritional Science For students interested in nutrition & dietetics. • Degree Option: • Didactic Dietetic Program • Career Options: • Registered Dietician • Community Nutritionist • Sports Nutrition
Nursing • Students admitted as “Undeclared with an interest in Nursing” • Students submit a separate application to the School of Nursing. IMPACTED
Social Work For students interested in social and economic justice and who are able to facilitate change. • Child Welfare Agencies • Forensic Social Work • Probation • Hospitals IMPACTED
First Time Freshman Guidelines • Declare & be accepted into a major by 45 units. • Select an option if available by 45 units. • 12 units recommended for the 1stquarter. • Enroll only in 100-200 level courses. • Drop courses on time (WU = F grade).
Block A: Basic Subjects • Completed by 45 units • 16 units required (4 courses): 1 course from A1, A2, A3 and A4. • Block A courses must be passed with a C or better. • Academic Advisor will review each block in detail once this presentation is complete. 4
Math and English: Remedial Courses • Students who test into remedial math and/or English are required to enroll in the appropriate course(s) each subsequent quarter until they have completed all their remedial courses. Students have one year to complete the remedial course work (Fall 2014-Summer 2015). Bad Example: • **No more than 12 units**
English Requirement Cal State L.A. students must pass two English courses to fulfill graduation requirements: ENGL 101 and ENGL 102. ENGL 101 ENGL 102 WPE (UNIV 400) • Both courses must be passed with grades of C or better. • Writing Proficiency Exam must be passed before reaching 135 units.
Math courses that fulfill Block A4 requirement • Math 100: Introduction to College Mathematics • Math 102: College Algebra • Econ/Math 109: Quantitative Reasoning with Statistics • For majors that require it - • MATH 104A: Precalculus
Benchmark Units • 180 units to graduate • 60 units of Upper Division coursework (36 must be taken at Cal State L.A.) • 45 units taken at Cal State L.A. • 60 units of Lower Division GE’s • 12 units of Upper Division GE’s
Grade Point Average (GPA) • 2.0 minimum in Major, Overall, Cal State L.A. & GE • Below 2.0= Probation • If satisfactory progress is not made in improving GPA= Disqualification • If disqualified, reinstatement can be requested within 2 quarters • If student fails to request reinstatement within 2 quarters= must reapply for readmission
