Long-term consumption of low levels of arsenic may pose health risks to humans. Arsenic consumption has been linked to skin, bladder, lung, kidney, nasal, liver and prostate cancer, as well as other non-cancerous effects. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently lowered the drinking water standard, termed the maximum contaminant level (MCL), for arsenic in water to 10 micrograms per liter (ug/L) for public drinking water systems. The EPA's maximum contaminant level goal (MCLG) for arsenic in drinking water is 0 ug/L. This means that according to the EPA, water intended for human consumption would ideally contain no detectable arsenic. If you receive your water from a private well, you may want to have your water tested for arsenic.
