Type Lines • Two innermost ridges • Frequently broken, may not be continuous • Run parallel or side by side • At a certain point diverge or separate • One running opposite the other or tending to engulf the pattern area
Divergence Point or Area • Spreading apart of two lines which have been running parallel or nearly parallel
Pattern Area • Part of loop or whorl patters • Bounded by type lines • Characteristics necessary for classification and identification are located
Ridges • Tiny elevation or hill-like structures • Found on epidermis of skin • Containing sweat pores • Appear as black lines with tiny white dots in an inked fingerprint patterns
Furrows • Depressions or canals/ groves • Found between ridges • Appear as white lines in an inked fingerprint impression
Pores • Opening located on the ridge surface
Focal Points • Outer (delta) and innermost terminus (core) • Enclosed within pattern area of loops and whorls
Delta • Outer focal point or terminus • Found on the center or approximately center of the divergence point of the type lines • Or a point in a first recurving ridge located nearest to the center and in front of the divergence of the type lines
Types of Delta • Open Delta • Displays any ridge formation EXCEPT bifurcating ridge • Located mid-way where the type lines separate and not joint to any of the neighboring ridges • Closed Delta • A bifurcating ridge that obstruct or blocks the space or opening where the type lines separate
Core • Inner terminus or focal point • Found inside on the center or approximate center of the pattern area
Types of Core • Bar or Rod Core • Point located at the tip of the ending ridge • Rising high or above the shoulders of the innermost recurving ridge • Staple Core • Point located on the shoulder of the innermost looping or recurving ridge • Farther from the delta • Fragmentary Core • Very short ridge or dot ridge • Located on or above the shoulder lines of the innermost recurving or looping ridge
