Ties The duration of a note can also be lengthened with a tie. A tie is a curved line that joins two notes of the same pitch. The tone is held for the combined value of the two notes. . = = =

Quarter Time Music is divided into measures which are separated by barlines. double bar line (end) measure/bar barline barline The time signature is placed after the clef.
When the time signature has “4” as the lower number, it tells us that the music is in quarter time. This means that a quarter note gets 1 beat. 2 quarter note beats in each bar The upper number of the time signature is the number of beats in each bar. 4 quarter note beats in each bar 3 quarter note beats in each bar
Since we know that a quarter note gets one beat in quarter time, we can determine the number of beats for other note and rest values: Sixteenth Half Eighth Quarter Whole ¼ beat 4 beats 2 beats 1 beat ½ beat
