Jest inicjatywą Komisji Europejskiej, mająca na celu zwrócenie uwagi na kwestię bezpiecznego dostępu dzieci i młodzieży do zasobów internetowych. W Polsce Dzień Bezpiecznego Internetu organizowany jest przez Fundację Dzieci Niczyje oraz NASK, odpowiedzialne za realizację programu "Safer Internet" w Polsce.
