  8. The Endocrine System Page 15

  9. Pituitary Gland • The hormones produced by this gland are important because many of them regulate the other endocrine glands

  10. Pituitary Gland Hormones • Antidiuretic Hormone (ADH) – stimulates reabsorption of water • Oxytocin – stimulates uterine contractions and release of milk • Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) – stimulates follicle maturation in females and sperm production in males • Luteinizing hormone (LH) – stimulates ovulation in females, and testosterone secretion in males

  11. Pituitary Gland Hormones • Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) – Stimulates thyroid to release thyroxine • Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) – stimulates adrenal cortex to release hormones • Growth hormone (GH) – stimulates growth

  12. Hypothalamus • Either directly or indirectly, the hypothalamus controls the release of hormones from the pituitary gland

  13. Thyroid Hormones • Thyroxine – increases metabolic rate and body temperature; regulates growth and development • Calcitonin – inhibits the release of calcium from bone

  14. Want to see a thyroid deficiency???

  15. Parathyroid Hormones • Parathyroid Hormone – stimulates the release of calcium from bone

  16. Adrenal Gland hormones • Aldosterone – controls salt and water balance • Cortisol – regulates carbohydrate, protein and fat metabolism • Adrenaline – increases the body’s response to stress • Norepinephrine – functions in the emergency response

  17. Pancreas Hormones • Glucagon – stimulates the conversion of clycogen to glucose, raising the blood glucose level • Insulin – stimulates conversion of glucose to glycogen, lowering the blood glucose levels

  18. Ovary Hormones • Estrogen – develops and maintains female sex characteristics • Progesterone – promotes continued growth of uterine lining and formation of placenta

  19. Testis hormones • Testosterone – develops and maintains male sex characteristics; stimulates sperm development
