3. Las posadas • Posadas are major Christmas celebrations in Mexico.  They take place 9 days before Dec 24. and represent the re-enactment of St. Joseph and Virgin Mary's  journey to Bethlehem. For the Posada, family, friends, and neighbours divide themselves into two groups— Peregrinos (pilgrims) and innkeepers.  The Peregrinos (pilgrims) will walk to three different houses holding white candles and singing Posada songs that ask for shelter.  The peregrinos are refused at each shelter until they finally reach the third "inn" (posada) where they are welcomed to stay. This is the house that will host the Posada for the evening. Se visitan las casas

4. Once in the house, it is time for the peregrinos to pray around the Nativity scene (set without the baby Jesus). When the prayers are done, it's time for the children to have fun. A star shaped piñata is filled with, fruits, sugar canes, shelled peanuts, candy and sometimes coins. The children try to break the piñata with blindfolds and a stick while everyone sings.

5. When piñatas were originally introduced to Mexico in the 16th century they were meant to represent the seven deadly sins (greed, gluttony, pride, envy, wrath, sloth and lust). The participants were blindfolded as a representation of blind faith and spun 33 times in memory of how many years Christ lived. The stick they used to break the pinata signified goodwill.
