  1. OBJECTIVE: To use quotes from the Bible, the teachings of Jesus and the work of Martin Luther King Jnr to understand Christian views towards racial harmony.

OUTCOMES… Your GOALS for the end of this lesson are… GradesC • You will be able to describewhat can be learnt from the bible about racial harmony and what Jesus did to support this. • Grade B • You will be able to explain how Martin Luther King Jnr followed the teachings of Christianity and how he promoted racial harmony. • Grade A-A* • You will be able to evaluate whether the Christian church is doing enough in the modern day to support racial harmony.

  3. Starter… This photograph was taken during the apartheid era in South Africa (where white people ruled over black people and were seen as being legally superior). This picture was taken in 1992 – the apartheid finally ended in 1993 though racial unrest still exists today. What is the purpose of this sign? How do you think it made (i) black people and (ii) white people feel? Explain your answers. When do you think this was taken?

  4. Christian views on racial harmony… What are Christian views on racism and equality?...

  5. Look at the quotes on the sheet. Decide what they mean collectively and complete the box underneath the quotes. The Bible says…

  6. “There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” (Galatians 3:29)

  7. “God does NOT show favouritism, but accepts men from every nation.” (ACTS 10:34-35)

  8. “For God created man in his own image...” (Genesis 1:27)

  9. What does this tell us about how Christians should view racism? Christianity is opposed to racism. The Bible teaches that ALL races are EQUAL in the eyes of God and should be treated so. Everyone was created by God and therefore we are ALL EQUAL and should have equal rights. Christians should support and promote racial harmony.

  11. Teachings of ... Jesus always treated people in the same way, no matter where they were from. His most famous teaching “Love your neighbour as yourself” looked to promote racial harmony.

  13. Jesus' own example and teachings supported beliefs in equality and racial harmony. The best example being the Parable of the Good Samaritan.The Samaritans were a mixed race and suffered much discrimination.Jesus chose one of them to be the hero of his story in order to show the true meaning of love thy neighbour.

  16. A Christian who worked to promote racial harmony… For your exam you will need an EXAMPLE of a Christian who worked to promote racial harmony. You CAN’T use Jesus – He was NOT a Christian! The best example to use is MARTIN LUTHER KING JNR (1929-1968). Many Christians throughout the world, past and present have been inspired by the work of this Christian minister.

  17. Rosa Parks- She sat on a bus! Put the sub heading in your books: Rosa Parks- Bus Boycott Remember you can use these as examples for your exam. What did Parks do that was so inspirational and why? What did her actions achieve in the long run? Parks protested with MLK. She helped to start the Great Bus Boycott in Alabama. The next slide has four information points, you need to complete notes on all four in the time given. Challenge task: Try to form points and examples for what each organisation / person would do.

  23. Christianity and racial harmony TODAY… Desmond Tutu The first black Archbishop of South Africa. He led a campaign of peaceful protests to gain equal rights for black people during the apartheid (where black people were legally inferior to white people) in South Africa in 1994. In the UK the Church of England has its own Race and Community Relations Committee, which advises Christians about issues of racism Today Christian Churches throughout the world condemn racism and encourage ALL Christians to treat EVERYBODY EQUALLY. The Catholic Church has spoken out against racism saying... “...it is incompatible with God’s design.” The Black Anglican Concerns Committee helps Christian organisations to develop anti-racist programmes and gives ethnic minorities opportunities to play an active role in the church.
