  1. Be The Expert Connections between Fahrenheit 451 and Uncle Tom’s Cabin

  2. Themes • Control is a key theme in both Uncle Tom’s Cabin and Fahrenheit 451. In both novels control helps the reader to understand why the societies are the way they are. • Control is usually a result of POWER. Power is the source of control and determines who or what is most dominant in that particular situation, usually them being the ones to make all the decisions.

  3. Theme (Cont.) • EXAMPLES: • In Uncle Tom’s Cabin, control is very important because when white men owned slaves as property, they could do as they pleased with them. The Africans, however, had no say in what was done to them, whether it be good or bad. White men were more powerful than African slaves, so they had the authority to treat them as bad as they wanted to. In the Southern states where slavery was legal, the majority of white men were for slavery, making those states slave states.

  4. Theme (Cont.) • EXAMPLES: • In Fahrenheit 451, the government is much more powerful than the people, so they decided to ban books altogether, and made all the decisions on what the future of books would be, since they had the authority to control all of society and rewrite history.

  5. Themes • The Moral Power of Women • In Uncle Tom’s Cabin and Fahrenheit 451, women play major rolls by being brave and capable of making a statement.

  6. Examples • Clarisse: Clarisse definitely changed Montag’s point of view on their society by mentioning that firefighters used to put out fires, not start them, and to stop and think about the little things in life. • “Strange. I heard once that a long time ago houses used to burn by accident and they needed firemen to stop the flames.” p.8

  7. Examples • Eliza & Mrs. Shelby: • Eliza is a strong willed woman who risks her life to save her son from being sold into slavery. • Though Mrs. Shelby and her husband own slaves, she hates the thought of Harry being sold, so she is happy that Eliza decided to run away with him.
