Where did LNPs evolve from? • Biodiversity Strategy 2020- It’s mission is to: “ halt overall biodiversity loss, support healthy well functioning ecosystems and establish coherent ecological networks, with more and better places for nature for the benefit of wildlife and people” • Local Nature Partnerships (LNPs) are a key Natural Environment White Paper Commitment • White Paper- Links the value of the natural environment to wellbeing and sustainable economic growth. • Localism Agenda

What is the purpose of a LNP? • Drive positive change in the local natural environment; taking a strategic view of the challenges and opportunities facing nature, people and the economy. • Contribute to achieving the Government’s national environmental objectives locally • Influence key decision-making relating to the natural environment and its value to social and economic outcomes, working closely with Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs) and Health and Wellbeing Boards.

Timescales for developing a LNP: • We have received seed funding for a full time officer for 6 months from Defra to develop a LNP in Wiltshire and Swindon • Undergone ppenconsultation with wide range of partners • Submitting an application to Defra by 31st May 2012 to apply for official recognition as a LNP. Application must include: • Governance Structure • Propose Strategic Board for approval by Defra • Propose 3 year Strategic Plan for Natural Environment • Government will confirm LNP status and invite LNPs to establish their Boards from July 2012

LNP- Communications • Will launch a Website- provide updates on progress of environmental policy and action across Wiltshire and Swindon • Raise profile of all the good work being achieved across the county • Provide links to the Board, this will give everyone the chance to have their say in direction of LNP • Ensure LNP is based on a sound evidence base- align with new landscape scale BAP to inform decisions- both strategic and delivery

What is the added benefit of a LNP? • Raise the profile of the Natural Environment across all sectors • Coordinate and create a integrated vision for the future - ensure local decision making is key • Support and enhance on-going projects/partnerships • Assist with securing more sustainable/long term funding for projects • Protect and add value to local area developments - influencing Local Planning Regulation • Promote the development of a ‘Green’ Economy

Your feedback/opinions • We have 5 weeks to submit the application to Defra • Will circulate draft of the application- will cover everything mentioned to date • Would appreciate any comments/feedback • Look forward to supporting GreenSpace Initiative in the future • Still a developing process...watch this space
