Peace or War? A. A Peace Petition 1. Second Continental Congress May 10, 1775 2. Olive Branch Petition a. Declared loyalty to king and asked him to repeal Intolerable Acts b. King sent 20,000 more troops

B. Rebels take Ticonderoga 1. Ethan Allen and Green Mt. Boys attack Fort Ticonderoga 2. Won valuable supply of cannons and gunpowder 3. Gave Americans a key route into Canada
C. Setting up an Army 1. Appointed George Washington of VA as commander 2. Moved to take charge of forces around Boston
II. Advantages of the Opposing Sides A. Patriots (about 1/3) 1. Disadvantages a. Forces were poorly organized and untrained b. Few cannons, little gunpowder, no navy c. Most preferred to fight only locally
2. Advantages a. Most Patriots owned rifles and were good shots b. Brilliant commander c. Determined to fight to defend their homes and property
B. The British 1. Advantages a. Highly trained military b. Best navy in the world 2. Disadvantages a. Armies 3000 miles from home b. News and supplies took a long time to reach troops
C. Loyalists 1. Wealthy merchants and former officials 2. More in Middle colonies and South than New England 3. Many fled to Britain or Canada
III. The Fight for Boston A. Battle of Bunker Hill 1. Patriots moved to Breed’s Hill to fire on British ships 2. British forced to retreat twice 3. Third try British captured hill but high losses 4. First major battle of Revolution
B. The British Leave Boston 1. Weeks after Bunker Hill, Washington finds 16,000 troops camped around Boston 2. Begins to train them to be soldiers 3. Placed cannons from Ticonderoga overlooking harbor 4. British withdraw to Canada 5. British blockade ports and hire mercenaries
