OBJECTIVES • Describe the evolution of past to present clinical evaluation of student performance. • Describe how different levels of student performance are determined in the clinical setting. • Analyze the impact of current clinical evaluation system on student grades and clinical performance.
Where did we start? • Combined theory and clinical course • Pass/fail • Numerical grade • Points system
Why did we need a change? • There were almost all “A”s in the clinical courses • Sought to differentiate those students who were truly “A” students • Wanted to have areas separated so that each area would be more fairly and objectively graded
First Year Clinical Evaluation First Semester • Clinical Experience (30%) • All areas based on mastery (R&A, prep, client care, nursing process, and communication) ***must show mastery in all areas in order to progress. • Other Areas: (70%) • Points for Skills Lab Performance (1-3 points for each skill) • Medical Terminology Test • Process Recording • Portfolio
What makes up the points for the student grade? • Responsibility and Accountability 25% • Clinical Prep 75% • ***These 2 areas count for 60% of grade • Other Areas (count for 40% of grade) • Drug Calculation • Process Recording • Portfolio • Skills Lab
First Year Clinical Evaluation Second Semester GRADING RUBRIC FOR NU 125 Clinical Prep: 3 all cards submitted complete and correct; can verbalize understanding of the prep material 2 All cards correct 1 1-2 cards missing, incomplete or incorrect 0 More than 2 cards missing, incomplete, or incorrect Responsibility/Accountability: 3 Meets all outlined critical criteria in category 2 Failure in 1 area of outlined critical criteria in category 1 Failure in 2 areas of outlined critical criteria in category 0 Safety violation or failure in 3 or more areas of outlined critical criteria in category On the days of orientation, health fair prep, and health fair, the student will receive either a 1 or a 0, since there are no specific criteria to evaluate.

GRADING RUBRIC Based on a scale 0 to 3 points based on specified criteria for each specific area
Client Care 3 Points • Implements and evaluates a plan of care that is accurately individualized and prioritized for the client • Verbalizes decision making skills and rational • Organized • Confident in skills performance • Does not require prompting from the instructor to complete essential task

NU 225 CLINICAL GRADING POINTS SYSTEM Students must pass in all areas of the clinical critical criteria in order to pass NU 225. This clinical experience accounts for 90% of the clinical course grade. There are no areas of mastery.
Students are assigned additional points in the areas of drug calculation, portfolio, skills test, and skills lab which will account for 10% of the total clinical grade.
