French motivations • The French wanted to compete with Spain in their quest for wealth & trade with the “New World”
French motivations • Sieur de La Salle convinced the king of France that French friars could convert the natives of the “New World” to Catholicism.
French motivations • La Salle also wanted to establish a French colony for his king at the mouth of the Mississippi River to control trade in North America.
La Salle in texas • LaSalle missed the mouth of the Mississippi River by 400 miles and ended up at Matagorda Bay in Texas.
Fort st.louis • La Salle built Fort St. Louis, which ended up failing because of Karankawa attacks, drought & disease. • La Salle was killed by his own men in 1687.
Effect on spain • Since Spain’s main competition (France) in the colonization of Texas had failed, they now had total control of Texas.
