Annual Conference for External Examiners Strategy & Overview Professor Julie Mcleod Pro Vice-Chancellor Learning, Teaching and the Student Experience
• Best for professionally recognised and practice-oriented programmes • Best for connecting and working with our local and regional economy, businesses and communities, and international partners • Best for being digitally advanced, agile and responsive in the way we work • Best for being inclusive and global in outlook and approach
Impact: • Emphasis on practice-oriented assessments and experience within the curriculum • heightened use of Technology-enhanced learning and effective use of online accessibility • continued emphasis on growing effective partnerships nationally and internationally • responsiveness to market ie multiple intakes, postgraduate and professional needs
Outcomes of External Examiner reporting (12-13) Commended; • the application of research/scholarly activity feeding into the curriculum • assessment strategies for being varied, creative and innovative using real-world scenarios and clearly linking theory to practice eg multiplatform and pervasive media including blogs and other tools for critical reflective learning • the ability to engage with professional and high quality visiting lecturers from a range of creative media industries • innovative and variable forms of practice-led assessment using real patient information, TEL, online tools and simulations
Concerns raised: • Low engagement with online student module evaluation Action: We have changed some aspects following feedback and looked at sector best practice – continue to monitor • Possible over-assessment Action: Further guidance being developed and good practice shared to support curriculum design • Challenge over comparability and quality of teaching and assessment standards within some Collaborative Provision Action: formalised role of link tutor and partnership lead to ensure close engagement with partners. • Additional support needs to be identified to enhance confidence for international students Action: realigned Academic Support to ensure clear signposting and accessibility for all students.
