What! No Gold? • Dutch will profit from fur trade • Colony slow to attract Dutch settlers • Slowly it becomes a melting pot • Germans • French • Scandinavians • 1660’s-20% pop. Was africans
Who are these guys? • Dutch- friendly relations w/ Iroquois • Smart!- Iroquois were powerful/well organized • Dutch were much more interested in fur trade vs. conquering • Some fighting did occur-over trade routes and land claims

Holy Experiment,cont. • No rich land owners • Settle-you get 50 ac. And a right to vote • Philadelphia-capital-city of brotherly love • Natives=friends • Native/settler court to insure fair treatment • Natives respected him!
Challenges Wm. Penn faced • Had to attract settlers • Many different europeans arrive • Slaves-even owned by Quakers • Colony was successful,but Penn never profited • He dies in 1718 • Vision fades,but does not disappear • His ideas of equality would form American values
The first 13 Colonies • Eventually, the 13 colonies would form • Maryland-famed for religious freedom • N/S Carolinas follow • Georgia-no slaves/no rum! • All of this would change when king takes control in 1752
