Ostia antica Ostia was Rome’s first colony. In 68 B.C., the town was sacked by pirates. During the sacking, the port was set on fire, the consular war fleet was destroyed, and two prominent senators were kidnapped. The town was soon enriched by the construction of a new harbour by Claudius on the northern mouths of the Tiber called “portus”. Ostia grew to 50.000 inhabitants in the II century A.D., reaching a peak of 75.000 inhabitants.
The port Ostia didnothave a good, naturalharbour. The EmperorClaudius, in 42 AD, built a new port at Ostia Portus, whichhad a ligthouse 130 metres high.. The location wasperfect: near the mouth of the Tiber , a riverwhichisstillnavigable up to the centre of the capital. Portuswasdescribed a “PortusOstiensis”.
The Forum Baths In the second century A.D. the biggest baths, the most sumptuous and the most spacious, were built. This bath is formed by a floor with mosaics, with a laconicum of elliptic form and a calidarium; it was illuminated by huge windows. This bath is particular because of the disposition of the warm rooms.
The baths of Neptune It’s one of the first buldings you find on the right hand side of the main road. It’s well known for its Antonine black and white mosaics. This compound has a dimension of 67x67 metres.
Public Toilets in Ostia Antica This building was dedicated to public toilets: people sat on the round carved seats in this public room and enjoyed a chat, while running water was used to keep the place clean. A stunning example of civic architecture!
Ostia’s Forum The Market place is a large complex of ruins in the city of Ostia, not far form the Theatre. The surviving buildings and structures present a living model of life in the Roman city.
