Pressure potential • A force that resists water flow due to a container (cell) being full and not wanting to expand any more. Cell walls of plant cells are important in this regard.
Solute potential • Solute potential = - i M R T • i = the number of pieces the solute breaks into in the water • R = a constant (.0821) • T = temperature • M = concentration of the solution • NOTE: The negative is important
Negative • As solute potential is more negative with increased solute concentration, the water will move from high to low water potential. • A high concentration of solute leads to a more negative (lower) water potential.
