TI-nspire Calculator Demonstration Geometric Series and Medicine Doses Keri Salvador (NJIT, C2PRISM) Teacher Professional Development Day March 17th, 2010
Introduction to TI-nspire • TI-nspire advantages over TI-83 Plus • Creates notes, question & answer pages • Symbolic Calculations • Memory • TI-nspire disadvantages over TI-83 Plus • May take time to adapt to larger keypad • Software is licensed and .tns files cannot convert to other formats • Battery Life
Presentation Outline • Introduction to TI-nspire • About TI-nspire • Application of TI-nspire • Conclusion
About TI-nspire: Home • Home Feature • House logo = applications menu • From applications menu, select desired application
About Ti-nspire: Menu • Document Menu Feature • Each feature, such as calculator, notes, etc. has its own menu (press [menu]) • The Q&A template is [1] under this notes menu • Use green and grey keyboard buttons
About TI-nspire: Tools and Files • Tools Feature • Press [ctrl], [house logo] to see document tools • Unless you open a previously saved document, you will open a new document every time you start working on the TI-nspire. • To access files, press [1]
Sum of Geometric Series • How do we get the sum of a geometric series? • Definition of geometric series: • Let Sn = a + ar + ar2 + ar3 + … + arn • Multiply r to both sides of equation. • Sn= rSn = Sn(1-r) = ar + ar2 + ar3 + ar4 + … + arn+1 • Sn (1-r) = a - arn+1 • Sn = a(1 - rn+1 ) / (1-r)
Application of TI-nspire • Accessing Answers using Menu
Conclusion • The handout activity about geometric series used to estimate medicine levels in the human body uses multiple functions of TI-nspire calculator. • The TI-nspire .tns file has a Q&A application throughout the lesson. The presenter will use the Question-Answer feature of the TI-nspire to confirm a student answer. • Whole group instruction using the TI-nspire notebook Q&A application • Independent work through answering the questions and creating data graphs on TI calculators • Answers are provided in the .tns file, but hidden from the students until the instructor chooses to reveal them to the class.
