Assessing the Effect of Temperature On Respiration Rate In Gryllus vocalis
Poikilotherms v. Homeotherms • Poikilotherms – body temperature conforms to ambient temperature • Homeotherms – body temperature is regulated over a range of temperatures
Quadratic Analysis of Arthropod Distribution v. Temperature • What is the relationship between the ambient temperature and the number of Arthropoda present in a square meter?
LAB: Quadratic Analysis of Arthropod Distribution v. Ambient Temperature • Purpose: To determine if there is a relationship between the ambient temperature and distribution of local Arthropoda • Method: Quadratic Analysis
Assessing the Independent Variable • 1) Assemble a 1m2 quadrat from PVC sections • 2) Using the digital probe, assess the air temperature of three locations within the quadrat to the nearest 0.1°C
Assessing the Dependent Variable • 3) Sweep the quadrat with the kick net for 15 seconds and count the number of Arthropodathat you collect • 4) Repeat this process 2x and average the # of Arthropoda at that site • 5) Make qualitative notes about the type of vegetation at this site
Assessing the Data • Repeat the process for two more sites (total of 3) • Report your data to your instructor • Record the data from the Excel spreadsheet on a piece of paper • Create a distribution (Scatter Plot) of # of Arthropoda v. Ambient Temperature on separate graph paper • Answer the analysis questions in your lab notebook (disregard focus on sites A & B, looking instead at any relationship between temp. & # of Arthropoda)
